Ah, allergy season. The aspect of Spring that I dread the most is allergies. Everything is in bloom, and the air is filled with pollen. I love to be outside enjoying the sunshine and fresh air, but I don’t want the constant sneezing, itchy eyes, runny noses, and fatigue that come with the change of season.

It wasn’t that long ago when I used to go through the season without a care in the world, but now I have to plan before I step outside. Below I share some tips and tricks that have helped me in the past years.

Starting with the basics

First and foremost, I take care of myself during this time and give myself grace for my sluggishness. I remind myself that this too shall pass once falls comes. I do my best to get as much sleep as possible, stay hydrated, and eat healthy food to boost my immune system. I also keep the windows shut, prevent dust and pollen from entering my sanctuary, and use an air purifier in my bedroom to help me sleep. Additionally, I wear a facial mask when I go outside.

Natural remedies or medications- Whatever helps me breathe!

I use local honey throughout the year, which has anti-inflammatory properties to prevent sore throats and congestion. I recently started taking aleberry syrup for relief. Lastly, I got my doctor to prescribe me allergy medicine which has been a lifesaver and was more cost-effective than purchasing over-the-counter medication, such as Claritin or Zyrtec. I hate taking medication and being dependent on them, but it has been a game-changer since I started. It enables me to be more active outdoors.

Even with all these practices, I still feel extreme fatigue this time of year, and when I forget to take my medication, the next day is a nightmare. Allergies are a real pain, but I have survived allergy season with the right approach and treatment without sacrificing my quality of life. Although I am not excited about allergy season this year, I am better equipped to handle it.
