I got my second dose of the COVID Vaccine today (7/27/2021), and now I wait 14 days until the vaccine fully takes effect. I was one of the “wait and see” individuals. Honestly, it was not an easy decision to make. I read the facts posted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention about the benefits of taking the vaccine and the possible side effects. However, I was also hearing about the Adhoc cases where individuals had severe reactions to the vaccine.

It was a leap of faith because, first off, I don’t usually take the flu vaccine unless my doctor corners me. Second, I have been practicing social distancing and have been extremely careful and have been a strong proponent of wearing my mask, washing my hands, keeping my distance, and I plan to continue those practices. Third, I tend to consider myself as being reasonably healthy. Fourth, my family did not want me to take it.

In fact, in my household, I am the only one that has been vaccinated to date. My mom is interested in getting the vaccine and has been interested until my brother told her to wait. I decided to move forward to see if I experience any severe side effects and plan to bring her to take her shot as early as the end of the week.

Side effects: So far, I am sore at the injection site, and I am worried about long-term effects on my health.

My rationale for taking it: My social and community engagement calendar is filling up again to in-person gatherings, and I want to protect myself and the people around me.

I wish I had continued to wait, especially now with all the information about the new variant and the fact that the vaccine that has just been injected into my body may not be as effective against it.

Now, I wait and see what happens next.
