For the past couple of years, I have been taking a dipper dive into learning about racial inequities in the United States. I have found myself at odds with my feelings as my journey continues. Yet, I have felt a sense of accomplishment learning about the untold history of black people’s fight for justice. It has been incredible going through this journey with like-minded people. Individuals who care about social justice work and want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive and live successful lives.

Frustration and Sickness

However, the more I learn, the more frustrated, angry, and sorrowful I feel. These are not emotions I have experienced in the past. It has resulted in high stress, anxiety, and physical illnesses such as high blood pressure and obesity.
There are days when I feel hopeful that things will work out for the better. And that one day soon, we will reach the true equality that we all deserve.

True ordained equality and equity are so lacking but are much needed. Yet, I grieve.

” For with much wisdom comes much sorrow;
the more knowledge, the more grief. “

Ecclesiastes 1. 18

Unfair and Meaningless Woe

Racial disparities may continue past my lifetime because the artificial caste system created to keep groups and races separated perpetuates the endless cycle of inequities and injustice. Even if the caste system is disbanded, all the education and work to address racial injustice may seize to exist with a new issue of the day, such as another world war or global pandemic.

The power I have had the privilege to yield by association with my employment, education, and socio-economic status may be rescinded at any point. In contrast, friends and colleagues born with inherited privilege because of their race do not have to contemplate losing their power. They can walk into any room and not be questioned about their worth. Whereas I have to prove my worth before I can even enter the room. I have to continue to work to impress and show that I belong.

I grieve because this is the world in which I will one day birth and raise a child. A world by virtue of someone’s skin color, their character, behavior, and value may be judged. I wallow in my sorrow, for, although hopeful, tomorrow remains meaningless.
