Looking to God for Guidance on Rest and Renewal

In today’s fast-paced, modern world, finding time to rest properly can be a challenge. As Christians, we can look to God as an example to guide us towards finding rest and renewal. One significant example is how God rested on the seventh day of creation. Rest is a ministry, and in this post, we will explore what we can learn from God’s Day of rest and how we can apply these lessons to our lives.

“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.”

Hebrews 4 v. 9-10

Lesson One: Rest Is Sacred

Our society values busyness and productivity above all else. However, God himself rested after creating the world, showing us that rest is sacred. We should not feel guilty for taking the time to rest and rejuvenate. Rest is vital to a healthy spiritual, mental, and physical life.

Lesson Two: Rest Is A Gift

We can appreciate rest more when we view it as a gift. Rather than seeing it as a waste of time or something to avoid, we can see it as an opportunity to give thanks for the blessings in our lives. When we receive the gift of rest with gratitude, we can experience greater peace and contentment.

Lesson Three: Rest Brings Renewal

Modern society can lead to exhaustion and burnout. However, when we prioritize rest, we can experience renewal necessary for our overall well-being. God’s day of rest was an opportunity for God to appreciate the beauty and goodness he had created. In the same way, we can find renewal and a fresh perspective when we step back from our everyday lives.

Lesson Four: Rest Requires Discipline

Making time for rest can be challenging, and we need to create space for rest intentionally. This might involve setting boundaries with work, saying no to certain activities, or intentionally planning time for relaxation. We must be disciplined about taking the time to rest and recharge.

“Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do.”

Deuteronomy 5:12-14

When we look to God’s example of a day of rest, we can see the value and necessity of incorporating rest into our lives. Rest is not a luxury or a sign of laziness but a vital component of our overall well-being. As we follow in God’s footsteps and make time for rest and renewal, we can experience greater peace, contentment, and gratitude. Let us embrace the gift of rest with open hands and hearts, knowing that it is a sacred and necessary part of our lives.
