My First Horseback Riding Class

Since watching the movie Secretariat, I became fascinated by horses, but I had never considered the possibility of taking horseback riding classes to meet a horse in person. So, when I heard of an opportunity to take a horseback riding lesson, I decided to take it. I was a little nervous and thought about heading back home, especially after I met the horse, Dorla. However, I put on a brave face and started using my baby-speaking voice, drawing on the energy and support from my very patient and helpful instructor, Sammy.

We started by learning about horse safety. My instructor showed me how to approach Dorla, how to groom him, and how to handle him in case of an emergency. I even learned that horses have allergies, just like humans. Then, we went to the arena and learned to mount and dismount a horse.

Once in the saddle, my instructor showed me how to hold the reins and sit properly. Since it was my first class, we focused on walking the horse and getting acquainted. He was super excited and wanted to trot and run, but my instructor kept him in check to ensure I had a great experience. I am not saying it was easy since my instructor kept him in check throughout the entire time I rode him, but once I start getting the hint of it, I will confidently say it is.

Also, I was surprised by the leg, hip, core, and back exercises I was getting, and I will be hurting for a few days, but it was worth it. I had a lot of fun grooming Dorla and riding him! Being on top of a horse and feeling its power and strength was exhilarating.

By the lesson’s end, I felt confident and comfortable riding a horse. I had a great time and can’t wait to take more classes. Here are some of the things I learned from my first horseback riding lesson:

  • Horses are powerful animals, and it’s important to be respectful of them.
  • It’s important to have a good seat in the saddle.
  • You need to communicate with your horse through your body language.
  • Horseback riding is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors.

If you’re considering taking a horseback riding lesson, I highly recommend it! It’s a fun, challenging, and rewarding experience you’ll never forget. Here are some tips for getting the most out of your first horseback riding lesson:

  • Dress appropriately. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. You should also wear closed-toe shoes with a heel, such as boots or sneakers.
  • Bring a helmet. A helmet is essential for horseback riding, and most riding stables will require you to wear one.
  • Listen to your instructor. Your instructor is there to help you, so listen to their instructions and follow their lead.
  • Relax and have fun! Horseback riding is a great way to exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and learn new skills. Relax, have fun, and enjoy the experience!
