Fasting has been a practice for centuries and has been linked to spiritual and religious beliefs. However, it has recently gained attention in the health and wellness industry due to its potential benefits. As part of the 90-Day Journey to Transform Your Body and Soul, we are incorporating fasting into our practice. Let’s take some time to discuss some of the do’s and don’ts for a healthy and safe experience.
First, fasting involves not eating or drinking anything for a certain period. If that sounds difficult, it can be, especially when you are not used to abstaining from food. However, it can be done in different ways, such as intermittent fasting, water fasting, or juice fasting. Ultimately, you must do what works best for you and your body. Below, I share some dos and don’ts that you should consider as you embark on your fasting journey.

Do: Consult your doctor first. Fasting can be beneficial, but it can also be harmful if you have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, low blood pressure, or history of eating disorders. Your doctor can help you determine if fasting is right for you and guide you on how to do it safely.

Don’t: Skip hydration. Even if you’re not consuming food or solid drinks, you still need to keep yourself hydrated during fasting. Drinking water, herbal tea, or other non-caloric beverages can help prevent dehydration and other health problems. Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks, as they can spike your insulin levels and affect the benefits of fasting.

Do: Start slow and gradually increase the duration. If you’re new to fasting, don’t jump into a 24-hour fast. Instead, try intermittent fasting, which involves alternating periods of eating and not eating within a day. You can start with 12-hour fasts and increase the duration over time. This approach allows your body to adjust to the changes and prevent any adverse effects.

Don’t: Overeat when breaking the fast. When fasting is done, it’s essential to break it properly. But some people tend to consume more food than usual, thinking they can make up for the missed meals. This can lead to bloating, indigestion, and discomfort. Instead, eat small and nutritious meals that are easy to digest, such as fruits, veggies, or lean protein. It’s also advisable to avoid processed or greasy foods.

Do: Listen to your body. Fasting can be challenging, and it’s normal to experience some hunger pangs, weakness, or headaches. But if you feel dizzy, faint, or extremely fatigued, it’s a sign to break the fast and seek medical attention if necessary. Fasting should be a positive experience that boosts your health, not a harmful one that puts your body under stress.

In conclusion, fasting can be an effective way to improve your health and mental clarity, but only when done safely and wisely. By following these Do’s and Don’ts of fasting, you can maximize the benefits and minimize the risks. Always consult your doctor first, keep yourself hydrated, start slow and gradually increase the duration, break the fast properly, and listen to your body signals. With these tips in mind, you can fast your way to a healthier and happier life.
